As a hellish maelstrom of unfathomable and malicious soundfield lashing onto the desolate wasteland, Kostnatění's 2019 debut full length Hrůza zvítězí brought back the forgotten spells from the past to redefine Horror's true essence. Despite being a black metal project from the U.S, Kostnatění and his whole discography serve as a blatant resistance against the stagnated USBM tag or any current trends: from his unorthodox usage of Czech as the primary language for the texts, to the otherworldly dirty melodies and the subtle passages lurking in between the ferocity of riffs. The aesthetic and riff-work that strongly reminiscent of the legacy of Rhinocervs are reshaped into Kostnatění's own abyssal, yet often trance-evoking sound terror, trapping listeners within the labyrinth of poisoning thoughts - music of dreadful near-death experiences.

A harrowing and driving journey of emotion, expertly dashing between dissonance and powerful consonance (as another person said) in a way that takes you on a scary-yet-smooth journey through ripping thorn thickets and out into a blessedly open clearing, before plunging you back into the thicket in your mad dash. The concept is rock solid, the non-Western scales are refreshing and are excellently hammered into both dissonant and non-dissonant moods, the songwriting is very well crafted.

What a BEAST of an album. When it comes to blending black metal and mathcore, these guys and Hoplites are the clear leaders of the pack. This album is sheer annihilation of everything in it's path. Pure chaos and destruction. And it is beautiful.

Ultime album de Serpent Column, Kathodos est une perle rare de black metal. Ce qui saute aux yeux, c'est le soin apporté à la dimension technique : Theophonos créé un ensemble d'une cohésion parfaite et utilise des jeux d'échos avec des riffs dévastateurs qui vont et reviennent de manière différente ("Kathodos"/"Anodos", première et septième pistes, etc.). Cet album est en somme un moyen de nous enfermer dans un palais des glaces sur lequel Theophonos tire à coups de boulets de canons. Insane !
