Born from the crimson lotus of hellfire in the age of 2023, Japanese black metal enigma, Vandal, came from out of the fearful fog as an outfit whose identity is wreathed in mystery. Wasting little time upon the mortal plane, Vandal unchained an EP incantation revealing their mastery over the black arts, this by title of 地獄変 (Jigokuhen: referred to Hell Screen or Portrait of Hell), which paints an infernal portrait of a spiritual existence impaled upon the deadliest of sins. Suffocating with a wide variety of cantrips, 地獄変 (Jigokuhen) is choked with infectious tremolo riffs, bombastic black percussion, sanguine synth passages, clever spell composition, polished altar production, Japanese language oration, and an impressive native folklore thematic; those seeking new entities breaking into the mortal plane should not miss out the beginning of what promises to be a bloody career of black metal carnage.

What an impressive piece of black metal. This one-man hurricane is pure art. Sgah‘gahsowáh creates an haunting atmosphere. He puts so much soul in his music.

Blackbraid quickly followed up their 2022 debut in 2023 with more native folk infused furious black metal. This is by no means a sophomore slump as it is equally excellent, methodical, melodical, and approachable as the first record. 9/10
